Dance instruction

Effective Thursday, February 20th and every following Thursday The Istanbul Restaurant (2005B - 4St SW) will be hosting Tango Salon Nights. The program includes a free class on Tango Salon (8:30 - 9:00pm) and an open dance (9:00pm - Closing). Jennifer Lynn and I (Bruno) offered a Tango presentation at the Restaurant a little while ago to the people who happened to be at the restaurant that night. Our presentation generated applause, and helped us to plan Tango Salon Nights. Since we want to include a wider audience we will be playing not only Tango but also Swing and Latin music. Thanks to Ray and Gert and their wonderful East Coast Swing selection of music we will have a wider variety of Swing music to play. Join us this coming Thursday!

Class format:
Group exercises to make you aware of good posture, tango walking, and physical/spiritual connection for dancing.
Tango is presented as a walking dance and the dance is designed to flow in a circular trajectory. From the moment that an axis appears, there is circular motion around that axis. This is changing constantly and the dance is built rotating, not in the limited sense of turning around the same axis but in the sense of moving the axis. The axis can be in the man, in the woman, or be external to them
Musicality:
Recognize time signatures and musical phrases in tango dance and music and its genres -- tango salon, tango milonga, tango vals, tango canyengue
Interpretation:
Is OK to dance tango following a sequence of steps, but tango should be dance with the soul and therefore it requires interpreting the music with sparsed movements that are within the music, but not part of a choreographed routine.
Improvisation:
To improvise tango dancers have to be able to achieve minimum competency skills in posture, lead and follow movements, connection between dancers and their surroundings, and musical interpretation.
We provide examples and advise as to bring you to "the door" of interpretation, improvisation, and musicality ultimately the students have to work to find their own interpretation and be able "to cross the door" of these dance components.
Our classes begin with exercises on posture, connection, concentration, relaxation, and elongation.
Tango is seen as a walking dance and we emphasize walking ahead of teaching figures as the major component and expression of the tango dance. Since figures are outside the music we learn to walk first with the music and subsequently we learn to integrate figures with our walking and the music its compas and rhythm.
